8-Day Tanzania Family Safari

A family safari should not feel like a race from one park to another. It should give parents time to relax, children time to ask questions and everyone a chance to enjoy the wildlife without feeling rushed.

This 8-day Tanzania family safari is designed around that idea. It combines Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater in one private, well-paced journey through northern Tanzania.

You will travel in your own safari vehicle with a professional driver-guide who can adjust the day around your family. If the children want a break, need an earlier return to camp or are excited to spend longer watching elephants at a waterhole, the day can move at your pace.

At Serengeti Soul Adventures, we help families choose suitable accommodation, room arrangements and safari activities before travel. Whether you are travelling with young children, teenagers, grandparents or a mixed family group, we plan the journey so every member of the family feels comfortable and included.

Why Choose a Family Safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a wonderful place for children to see wildlife outside a screen and learn about nature in a real, meaningful way. A lion on the plains, elephants crossing the road or giraffes feeding from acacia trees are experiences that stay with a family for years.

A private safari also gives you flexibility. You are not sharing a vehicle with strangers or following a fixed group schedule. Your guide can stop for photographs, return to camp earlier when needed or spend more time at a sighting that interests your family.

This itinerary gives you a variety of landscapes:

  • Tarangire’s elephants and giant baobab trees
  • Lake Manyara’s forest, hippos and birdlife
  • Serengeti’s open plains and big cats
  • Ngorongoro Crater’s rich concentration of wildlife

Your 8-Day Tanzania Family Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, a Serengeti Soul Adventures representative will welcome your family and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.

This day is kept easy so everyone can recover from the journey, settle into the hotel and prepare for the safari. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy the hotel garden, swimming pool or a relaxed family dinner.

Your guide will confirm the safari departure time, answer any final questions and make sure you are ready for the days ahead.

Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time
Overnight: Family-friendly hotel or lodge in Arusha

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, you meet your private driver-guide and begin the journey to Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire is a great park for families because wildlife is often easy to spot. The park is known for its large elephant herds, old baobab trees, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and colourful birdlife. Children often enjoy seeing how different Tarangire looks from other parks, with its wide riverbeds and huge trees.

You will enjoy a relaxed game drive with a picnic lunch. Your guide will explain the animals, tracks and landscapes in a way that keeps the experience interesting for every age group.

In the afternoon, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Drive time: Approximately 2–3 hours from Arusha
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly lodge or tented camp in Tarangire or nearby area

Day 3: Tarangire to Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, travel toward Lake Manyara National Park. This smaller park has a very different character from Tarangire. The road passes through groundwater forest, open grassland and lakeshore areas, creating a rich habitat for birds, monkeys, hippos, elephants and buffalo.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed. The park is also home to large troops of baboons, which are often entertaining for children to watch from the safari vehicle.

After a game drive and picnic lunch, continue to Karatu, a green highland area near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your lodge gives the family a comfortable place to rest before the next stage of the safari.

Drive time: Approximately 2–3 hours, plus game drive
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly lodge in Karatu

Day 4: Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, leave Karatu and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park. You will stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint, where the whole family can look across the vast crater floor from above.

Continue toward the Serengeti, with a picnic lunch on the way. As you enter the park, the landscape becomes wider and more open. This is where many families first feel the true scale of the Serengeti.

The afternoon is an en-route game drive as you travel to your lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti. Keep your cameras ready for giraffes, zebra, elephants, lions and many other animals along the way.

Drive time: Approximately 6–8 hours, including scenic and game-viewing stops
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 5: Full-Day Serengeti Family Game Drive

Today is dedicated to the Serengeti. After breakfast, you set out for a full-day game drive with a packed lunch or return to camp for lunch, depending on your family’s preference.

Central Serengeti is known for its resident wildlife and is one of the best places to search for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes and hyenas. Your guide will plan the day around current wildlife movement and the interests of your family.

For younger children, game drives can be broken into shorter sections with time to rest at camp. Teenagers and keen photographers may prefer longer game drives in search of big cats and dramatic wildlife moments.

The evening is spent back at camp, sharing stories from the day over dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 6: Another Day in Serengeti National Park

A second full day in Serengeti gives your family the freedom to experience the park without pressure. Wildlife does not follow a timetable, and having another day means your guide can explore different areas and respond to fresh sightings.

You may begin with an early morning game drive, when the light is soft and predators are often active. Or, if your family prefers a slower start, enjoy breakfast at camp before heading out.

During the Great Migration season, your guide will focus on the areas where wildebeest and zebra herds are likely to be found. At other times of year, Central Serengeti still offers excellent wildlife viewing because of its permanent water sources and resident animals.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu

After an early breakfast, you leave the Serengeti and travel back toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on its remarkable floor.

The crater is one of the best places in Tanzania for families to see a high number of animals in a relatively compact area. You may see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas and flamingos. It is also one of the better places to search for the rare black rhino.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated crater site before ascending the crater wall in the afternoon. Continue to your lodge in Karatu for your final safari night.

Drive time: Approximately 4–5 hours, plus Ngorongoro Crater game drive
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Family-friendly lodge in Karatu

Day 8: Karatu to Arusha – End of Safari

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Arusha. You can be dropped at your hotel, Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport for a domestic flight to Zanzibar.

For families who want to continue their holiday, Zanzibar is a lovely beach extension after safari. A few days by the Indian Ocean gives everyone time to relax, swim and enjoy the final part of the trip together.

Drive time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Best Time for a Tanzania Family Safari

Tanzania can be visited year-round, and each season offers something different.

June to October is the dry season and is popular for wildlife viewing because animals gather around water sources. December to March is a good time for families interested in the wildebeest calving season in southern Serengeti and Ndutu.

April and May are greener and quieter, with fewer visitors and possible value at some lodges. November has short rains, but game viewing can still be very good.
