5-Day Zanzibar Beach and Stone Town Holiday

Zanzibar has two very different sides, and this 5-day holiday allows you to enjoy both. You begin in Stone Town, the island’s historic heart, then continue to the northern beaches of Nungwi or Kendwa for clear water, soft sand and relaxed Indian Ocean days.

Stone Town is full of history, colour and life. Its narrow streets lead past carved wooden doors, local markets, old coral-stone buildings and rooftop restaurants. After experiencing its culture, you move to the beach, where the rhythm changes completely.

At Serengeti Soul Adventures, we arrange this Zanzibar holiday with private transfers, carefully selected accommodation and meaningful island experiences. It is ideal for couples, honeymooners, friends, families and travellers finishing a Tanzania safari.

Why Combine Stone Town and Zanzibar Beach?

A Zanzibar beach holiday becomes more meaningful when you also experience the island’s history and culture.

Stone Town tells the story of Zanzibar’s Swahili, Arab, Indian, African and European influences. It is a place to walk slowly, look up at the balconies, visit the market and understand why Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island.

The beach stay gives you time to relax after sightseeing. Nungwi and Kendwa are among the best areas for swimming, sunset views and comfortable beach accommodation. Together, Stone Town and the northern coast create a well-balanced Zanzibar itinerary.

Your 5-Day Zanzibar Beach and Stone Town Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Zanzibar – Stone Town

On arrival at Zanzibar International Airport, a Serengeti Soul Adventures representative will meet you and transfer you to your boutique hotel in Stone Town.

The transfer is short, giving you time to settle in and enjoy your first evening on the island. Depending on your arrival time, you can take a gentle walk through the nearby streets, visit the seafront or enjoy dinner at a rooftop restaurant.

Stone Town has a special atmosphere in the evening. The streets become cooler, local life continues around the market and the ocean breeze comes in from the harbour.

Drive time: Approximately 15–25 minutes
Meals: Dinner, depending on your accommodation plan
Overnight: Boutique hotel in Stone Town

Day 2: Stone Town Tour, Prison Island and Transfer to the Beach

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walking tour of Stone Town.

You will explore the historic lanes, famous wooden doors, Old Fort, market area and other important sites that show Zanzibar’s history and culture. Your guide will explain the island’s role in Indian Ocean trade and the communities that have shaped Stone Town over centuries.

Later, take a boat trip to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. The island is known for its giant Aldabra tortoises and views back toward Stone Town. You may have time to walk around the island, see the tortoises and enjoy the sea before returning.

In the afternoon, leave Stone Town and travel to your beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa on Zanzibar’s northern coast.

Drive time: Approximately 1.5–2 hours from Stone Town to Nungwi or Kendwa
Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa

Day 3: Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling Experience

After breakfast, enjoy a morning ocean excursion toward Mnemba Atoll. This is one of Zanzibar’s best-known snorkelling areas, with clear water and coral reefs that attract colourful tropical fish.

The exact marine life you see depends on weather, tides and natural conditions, but the boat trip itself is part of the experience. The Indian Ocean is calm and beautiful in the morning, and the coastline looks completely different from the water.

After the snorkelling trip, return to your beach resort. The afternoon is free for swimming, relaxing by the pool, walking along the sand or enjoying a spa treatment.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa

Day 4: Free Beach Day and Sunset Dhow Cruise

Today is free for you to enjoy Zanzibar at your own pace.

You can relax at the resort, swim in the ocean, read beneath a palm tree or visit local shops and cafés. If you would like another activity, we can arrange scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, a village visit or a private beach dinner.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset dhow cruise. A traditional dhow is a wooden sailing boat used along the East African coast for generations. As you sail, the sun slowly drops toward the horizon and the sky changes from gold to deep blue.

Return to your resort for your final night in Zanzibar.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Beach resort in Nungwi or Kendwa

Day 5: Zanzibar Departure

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning at the beach before your private transfer to Zanzibar International Airport for your onward flight.

If your flight is later in the day, you may be able to arrange late checkout or leave your luggage at the hotel while enjoying the beach or pool.

Drive time: Approximately 1.5–2 hours
Meals: Breakfast
