6-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

This 6-day Tanzania Classic Safari brings together the wildlife areas that made northern Tanzania famous: Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

It is a well-balanced safari for travellers who want more than one landscape. You begin among Tarangire’s giant baobabs and elephant herds, continue through Lake Manyara’s forest and lakeshore habitat, spend time on the open plains of Serengeti and finish with a game drive inside the extraordinary Ngorongoro Crater.

At Serengeti Soul Adventures, we arrange this as a private safari. You travel with your own driver-guide and 4×4 safari vehicle, allowing you to stop when wildlife appears, take photographs at your own pace and enjoy each park without following a fixed group timetable.

This itinerary works well for first-time visitors, couples, families, small groups and travellers who want a complete introduction to Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit.

Why Choose This Tanzania Classic Safari?

This itinerary includes four destinations with very different wildlife experiences.

Tarangire is known for elephants, baobabs and the Tarangire River. Lake Manyara offers forest wildlife, baboons, hippos and birdlife. Serengeti gives you wide plains, big cats and the possibility of seeing the Great Migration at the right time of year. Ngorongoro Crater brings a remarkable concentration of animals together inside a natural volcanic caldera.

Six days gives you enough time to enjoy the route without making every day feel like a long transfer. You have a full day in Serengeti, plus game-viewing drives as you travel between the parks.

Your 6-Day Tanzania Classic Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your safari begins in Arusha, where your Serengeti Soul Adventures driver-guide collects you from your hotel or agreed pickup point. After a short introduction, you drive toward Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire is one of the most distinctive parks in northern Tanzania. The landscape is shaped by giant baobab trees, open grassland, seasonal swamps and the Tarangire River. During the dry season, the river attracts large numbers of wildlife.

You will enjoy a game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park. Tarangire is especially known for its large elephant herds, but you may also see buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, warthogs and many bird species.

In the late afternoon, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Drive time: Approximately 2–3 hours from Arusha
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Overnight: Safari lodge or tented camp in Tarangire, Karatu or nearby area

Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, leave Tarangire and travel to Lake Manyara National Park. Though smaller than Serengeti, Lake Manyara offers a very different safari environment.

The park has a groundwater forest with tall trees, lush vegetation and large troops of baboons. As you continue through the park, the landscape changes to open grassland and lakeshore areas where hippos, elephants, buffalo and many birds can be found.

Lake Manyara is famous for tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed. It is also a lovely park for birdwatching, with flamingos sometimes visible along the lake depending on water conditions.

After the game drive, continue to Karatu, a pleasant highland area close to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Drive time: Approximately 2–3 hours, plus game drive
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge in Karatu

Day 3: Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti National Park. You will stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint, where the wide crater floor can be seen far below.

Continue toward Serengeti with a picnic lunch on the way. As you enter the park, the scenery changes from green highlands to wide grassland, rocky kopjes and classic African savannah.

The afternoon is an en-route game drive as you travel toward your camp or lodge in Central Serengeti. Keep your camera ready, as giraffes, zebras, elephants, lions and hyenas may appear along the road.

Drive time: Approximately 6–8 hours, including game-viewing stops
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park

Today is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park. After an early breakfast, you set out with a packed lunch for a full-day game drive.

Central Serengeti, also called Seronera, is one of the best places for wildlife viewing throughout the year. Its rivers and permanent water sources attract animals even when the migration is elsewhere.

Your guide will explore different habitats, including river valleys, kopjes and open plains. This gives you a strong chance of seeing lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hyenas and a wide variety of antelope.

If you are travelling during the Great Migration, your guide will focus on the areas where the wildebeest and zebra herds are most likely to be found during your travel dates.

Return to camp or lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Serengeti as you travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

You then descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas. Its floor contains grassland, woodland, swamps and Lake Magadi, creating a rich habitat for many species.

You may see lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and elephants. Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the better places in Tanzania to look for the endangered black rhino.

Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the crater before ascending the crater wall and continuing to your lodge in Karatu.

Drive time: Approximately 4–5 hours, plus Ngorongoro Crater game drive
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge in Karatu

Day 6: Karatu to Arusha – End of Safari

After breakfast, begin the drive back to Arusha. The journey takes you through the highlands and rural areas of northern Tanzania.

Depending on your plans, you can be dropped at your Arusha hotel, Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport for a domestic flight to Zanzibar.

Drive time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

This safari can be enjoyed throughout the year.

From June to October, the weather is usually dry and wildlife can be easier to spot around water sources. Tarangire is especially rewarding during this period.

From December to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area may host the wildebeest calving season. The central Serengeti remains excellent for resident wildlife, especially big cats, throughout the year.

April and May are greener and quieter, with fewer visitors and changing weather. November may bring short rains but can still offer good wildlife viewing.

This 6-day itinerary can be extended with additional Serengeti nights, a Northern Serengeti Great Migration safari, Mount Kilimanjaro climbing or a Zanzibar beach holiday.
