7-Day Great Migration Safari in Northern Serengeti

The Great Migration is one of nature’s greatest movements. More than a million wildebeest, joined by zebra and gazelle, travel across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. Their journey is shaped by rainfall, grazing conditions and instinct, which means the herds are always moving.

This 7-day Great Migration safari is designed for the northern Serengeti season, usually from July to October, when many of the herds gather near the Mara River. This is the period travellers hope to see the famous river crossings, where wildebeest gather at the riverbank before making the sudden decision to enter the water.

At Serengeti Soul Adventures, we plan this itinerary with time in Northern Serengeti rather than treating it as a quick stop. You will stay close to the migration area, enjoy private game drives with an experienced safari guide and have enough time to follow the herds, search for big cats and wait patiently near the river when conditions are right.

A river crossing can never be guaranteed. Wildlife follows its own rhythm, and the animals may wait for hours, turn back or cross while no vehicle is nearby. What we can promise is a carefully planned safari in the right area, at the right time of year, with a guide who understands how to read the movement of the herds.

Why Choose a Northern Serengeti Migration Safari?

Northern Serengeti is one of Tanzania’s most remote and beautiful safari areas. The landscape is more rugged than Central Serengeti, with rolling grassland, granite outcrops, riverine woodland and the Mara River.

From July to October, the region becomes an important part of the migration journey. Wildebeest and zebra gather in large numbers, moving between Tanzania and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Predators follow the herds, creating excellent chances to see lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas.

The key to a good migration safari is time. Instead of rushing in for one night and hoping for a crossing, this itinerary gives you several days in Northern Serengeti. Your guide can follow fresh tracks, listen to ranger reports, check different river points and adjust game drives around the movements of the animals.

Your 7-Day Great Migration Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, a Serengeti Soul Adventures representative will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.

This is a relaxed arrival day after your international journey. You can rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for the early flight to Northern Serengeti the following morning.

Your safari briefing will cover luggage allowance for the light aircraft flight, expected weather, game-drive routines and what to bring each day.

Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time
Overnight: Hotel or lodge in Arusha

Day 2: Fly from Arusha to Kogatende – Northern Serengeti Game Drive

After breakfast, transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Kogatende Airstrip in Northern Serengeti.

The flight gives you a remarkable view of Tanzania’s changing landscapes below. On arrival, your safari guide will meet you and begin your first game drive in the north.

The area around Kogatende and the Mara River is one of the key migration zones during the dry season. You may see large herds of wildebeest and zebra, elephants moving through riverine woodland, giraffes, lions, hyenas and many species of antelope.

Your game drive continues toward your camp or lodge, with wildlife viewing along the way.

Flight time: Approximately 1.5–2 hours, depending on schedule and stops
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti

Day 3: Full-Day Great Migration Game Drive in Northern Serengeti

Today is dedicated to following the migration. After an early breakfast, leave camp with a packed lunch and spend the day exploring the northern Serengeti.

Your guide will focus on the areas where herds have recently been seen. During the migration season, wildlife movement can change quickly. A large group may gather near the Mara River in the morning and move several kilometres by afternoon.

If the conditions look promising, you may spend time near the riverbanks, watching and waiting. This is often where patience matters most. The wildebeest may gather, call, move forward, pull back and gather again before any crossing happens.

Even without a crossing, the northern Serengeti is rich in wildlife. The river attracts crocodiles and hippos, while lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas follow the migration herds across the plains.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti

Day 4: Another Full Day in Northern Serengeti

A second full day in Northern Serengeti gives you the best chance to experience the migration properly. You can continue following the herds, visit different Mara River crossing points and explore open plains where predators are active.

Your private guide will plan the day according to fresh information from the field. Some days may focus on the river, while others may follow migrating herds across the grassland or search for big cats near kopjes and woodland.

This is also a wonderful day for photography. Early morning light, dust from moving herds, dramatic skies and wildlife interactions create scenes that cannot be planned in advance.

Return to camp in the evening for dinner and rest.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti

Day 5: Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, begin the scenic journey south through Serengeti National Park toward Central Serengeti.

This is not simply a transfer day. It is a full game-viewing drive through changing landscapes. As you move south, the terrain opens into wide plains, rocky kopjes and river valleys.

Central Serengeti, also known as Seronera, is well known for resident wildlife throughout the year. It is one of the best places to look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas and buffalo.

You arrive at your Central Serengeti camp or lodge in the late afternoon.

Drive time: Approximately 5–7 hours, depending on wildlife stops and road conditions
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Safari lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu

After an early breakfast, enjoy a final Serengeti game drive as you travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

You then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the crater floor. The crater is one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife areas, with lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and a wide variety of birdlife.

Ngorongoro Crater also offers one of the better chances in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the crater before ascending the crater wall and continuing to your lodge in Karatu or the Ngorongoro highlands.

Drive time: Approximately 4–5 hours, plus Ngorongoro Crater game drive
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Lodge in Karatu or Ngorongoro highlands

Day 7: Karatu to Arusha – Departure

After breakfast, begin the drive back to Arusha. Depending on your onward plans, you can be dropped at your hotel, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

If you would like to end your safari with beach time, this itinerary can be extended with a domestic flight and a Zanzibar beach holiday.

Drive time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Where Is the Great Migration During the Year?

The Great Migration does not stay in one place. The itinerary above is designed for the Northern Serengeti river-crossing season, usually from July to October.

Travel Period Best Migration Area
December to March Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains – calving season
April to May Central and western Serengeti – herds begin moving north
June to July Western Serengeti and Grumeti area
July to October Northern Serengeti and Mara River area
November Eastern and southern Serengeti – herds move south again

If your travel dates fall outside the July–October period, Serengeti Soul Adventures can adjust your accommodation and route to follow the herds in the correct area.

Accommodation During the Migration Safari

For the best migration experience, accommodation should be close to the wildlife action. During the northern season, we recommend tented camps or safari lodges in or near the Kogatende and Mara River areas.

A tented camp allows you to stay close to the Serengeti environment while still enjoying a comfortable bed, private bathroom and freshly prepared meals. We can arrange mid-range, luxury or premium accommodation based on your preferred travel style.

Your confirmed itinerary will show the exact camp or lodge names before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

River crossings are most commonly associated with the July to October period, but exact timing depends on rainfall and the movement of the herds.

No. River crossings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed. The animals may wait, change direction or cross when no vehicle is nearby. Staying several nights in Northern Serengeti gives you more opportunity.

You will stay in a tented camp or lodge in Northern Serengeti, close to the migration area, followed by accommodation in Central Serengeti and Karatu or Ngorongoro highlands.

Can this safari be arranged as a honeymoon?
Yes. We can arrange a private safari vehicle, romantic tented camps, special meals and a Zanzibar beach extension after the safari.

Can I do this safari outside July to October?
Yes, but the route should be adjusted to the migration’s seasonal location. We will recommend the correct Serengeti area based on your travel dates.
